This laboratory's area of research involves studies of autoimmunity in models of experimental allergic encephalomyelitis, arthritis and diabetes in the NOD mouse. We are also investigating immune mechanisms in atherosclerosis, models of Alzheimer's disease and stroke. The primary thrust of investigations is the mechanism by which one can affect these experimental models by mucosally administered antigen and the basic mechanisms underlying these diseases.
Mechanistic studies involve defining mechanisms of tolerance and the cloning and characterization of regulatory T cells involved in tolerance induction including Th3, TR1 and CD25+ regulatory cells. Concomitant studies in humans involve studying immunoregulatory mechanisms in patients with multiple sclerosis.
